Short Story

Earlier this week I decided that we needed to get Mom out to see the house again one of these days, as she hadn't been out there since before we even signed papers to build it. Last night was really windy and overcast and we decided it wasn't a good day to go. So we went today instead, and it was beautiful outside.

As you'll have seen on the previous post, we have a roof and walls and everything, so we timed it perfectly for Mom and Dad to see it. We walked in and the first thing she said was, "Its huge!" And it is. The plan we're building is very open and spacious. We also have HUGE windows in each room. We're very excited about the whole thing. We got to the back end of the house and looked out at the view and Mom just wouldn't stop talking about how great it was and how jealous she was of it. Then she said to Dad that she wanted to move out here, and I made a joke about how the lot next door was still available. She kept exclaiming over the view and about how excited she was for us, until she started getting bit by mosquitoes and then she changed her mind about living out there. Well, we are only a few hundred feet from Utah Lake. Its also windy quite a bit of the time. But I think that will help keep the mosquitoes away.

We're so excited about the whole thing. Charles and I were talking about the windows and the view later in the afternoon, and as some of you know, we like to live in a cave. We almost never open our blinds because we've always lived where people can look right in on us, whether it be a first floor apartment 10 feet from the parking lot, or the third floor overlooking a small courtyard with 20 other windows. We like our privacy. But our new house, because its a bit unique in a neighborhood of 2-story homes (ours is a 1-level rambler) is 5 feet or so farther out the back than the rest of the homes around us, and it's also back a bit on the property. Because of this, our main windows on the sides are practically behind the house next door, and the house behind has a large barn and the actually house is really far away from us, hence, providing quite a bit of privacy. Charles says we might actually have the blinds open more than we ever have before. Mom will be happy about that. :)

We're also really excited about the basement. I know we've already mentioned that there are no window wells, and its really made the basement feel more like another story than a basement. We will finish it off to reflect that rather than make it feel like a typical basement.

Needless to say, we are so excited for the whole opportunity to be building our own home. We feel very blessed and grateful. We're also really enjoying any and all feedback we get, so keep it coming.
